The cat-and-mouse game is reignited and intensified in this second season of the Channel 5 drama.

One year later, Huw is recovering from his stabbing and moving on with his life with wife Alice, while daughter Margot is moving in with her boyfriend Sam. However, Huw starts receiving letters from Patrick in prison and Margot starts being stalked by a hooded figure. When a woman approaches Jenny, believing her missing husband to be the first unknown victim of the Ripton Stalker, Patrick will only talk to Huw, inevitably dragging him back in.

The season takes an unexpected turn as early as the first episode as Alice is killed in a hit-and-run. Huw continues to seem more interested in the case and Margot continues to seem more concerned about her safety than either of them do about grieving her, though this can be excused as such scenes wouldn’t make for entertaining viewing.

This season is much more fast-paced and complex in comparison to the straightforward narrative of the first, with constant twists and turns, leaving it unclear which new direction events are going to go in and where things will end, therefore gripping until the last minute.

The season ends with Huw now a suspect in Patrick’s escape and wanted by the police, Margot in the clutches of Patrick’s accomplice Sam (although she may have actually believed her dad on the phone call and is just playing along to stay alive) and Patrick on the run. While the unresolved ending is initially frustrating, surely this means a third season will happen?

Robson Green is convincing as the manipulative serial killer, a task all the more difficult when you are known for presenting factual series on fishing, while Jason Watkins continues to be stellar as the obsessive former detective.

This season is a lot more exciting and thrilling than the first and is thoroughly engaging as far as Freeview productions go.

7/10
