M3GAN’s delayed sci-fi horror spin-off finally arrives on digital platforms.

Programmer David is mourning the loss of his wife when the robotics company that he works for is bought out by another that produces a companion robot, which the lonely widow agrees to beta test. However, the android, named Sara, becomes out of control when she becomes obsessed with being David’s ultimate soulmate.

The violence is arguably the best element of the film, particularly the gruesome deaths of the delivery guy and Ben.   

Sara’s warning about how she will never die, even if her physical presence does, comes true with the unsettling ending as, one year later, David is introduced to a new companion robot that has finally gone to market, resembling Sara.

While the film is easy enough to follow and watch, it maintains almost no originality at all. The plot is almost identical to Subservience and yet another story in which a technological device that is supposed to be helpful goes rogue and poses a threat.

Furthermore, there is minimal reference to the M3GAN franchise of which it supposedly belongs, likely a marketing decision to help garner interest due to the films’ similar themes and shared production.

The film itself isn’t bad, but the AI-gone-wrong trope is wholly exhausted.
