Kate Hudson returns as party girl-turned-girl boss Isla Gordon, president of basketball team LA Waves, in the sports comedy drama.

Cam is back from his mandatory rehab and Isla fears that he is after his old job. Isla is marrying Lev but can’t stop thinking about her kiss with Jay, grouchy former Waves coach Norm is hired into the role again, Ali feels underappreciated and goes to work for the Toronto Trappers, Travis and Dyson find themselves in a love triangle, Marcus and Norm clash, new player Tommy White becomes Sandy’s new love interest and the team face financial difficulty.

The first season of Running Point was disappointing given that it comes from the creator of Never Have I Ever, but this second season steps it up in terms of both comedy and story.

However, it is no wonder that the team struggles financially as they fail to adhere to the capitalistic nature of business. Dyson sacrifices his loyalty to Isla and the team to hold out for a better paying contract and they concede to this, though their worst action is giving in to the dancers. Sofia publicly exposes their working conditions on TikTok instead of approaching Isla to discuss the matter, a sneaky move that should see her lose all respectability, though this too ultimately works.

The comedy is again mainly provided by Ness and Jackie, though this time is heightened by the guest appearance of series co-creator and co-executive producer Ike Barinholtz, who puts in a stellar performer as the Gordons’ cousin Bennie. This helps see the episode in which the Gordon family unite to play against the McShays become the highlight.

A strong ending is delivered as the Waves win the series and Marcus retires following his success, before a twist sees an outed Cam partner with Al to form a rival LA team, along with Jay as their new coach.

Running Point builds on its established premise to tell a story of business, sport and people.

7/10
