Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are back for the next chapter of Netflix’s Jewish-based romcom.

Joanne and Noah are now living together and, following Noah’s proposal, planning their wedding together. Meanwhile, following Sasha and Esther’s separation, Sasha grows closer to Morgan as Esther dates a new man.

Joanne and Noah’s relationship is less frustrating to follow this season as, now that Joanne is converting (or rather submitting) to Judaism, there is less friction between them. Bina is also more accepting of Joanne now too, but intrudes on their wedding plans and attempts to push her ideas on them. In fact, the only time when religion proves to cause tension is when Joanne is unsettled by Noah’s dance with his mother, which, in Joanne’s defence, is actually a rather disturbing and cringeworthy scene to watch.

When Esther broke up with Sasha at the end of last season, it paved the way for Sasha and Morgan to get together, which felt unfortunate at the time as Sasha is kindhearted whereas Morgan is self-absorbed. However, this season highlights how Sasha is one of the only people who see Morgan for who she really is and consequently reveals her vulnerability hidden behind a façade of confidence. Sasha’s crush continues as Morgan realises she has developed feelings for him, which culminates in them sleeping together amid their intimate trip to New York. Despite this, they are not given their happy ending at present as Sasha rejects a relationship between them and ends up sleeping with Esther in a surprise turn of events.

The season finale sees Joanne complete her conversion in front of Noah, while their families argue as truths come to light, and Joanne and Noah impromptu get married. Therefore, it ends up with the fallout of their last minute decision to come and the love triangle of Sasha, Morgan and Esther to be resolved, hinting that this series isn’t done just yet.

There’s still a few negative aspects to cope with. Joanne and Morgan’s pointless, annoying and inappropriate parents continue to feature. The large age gap between Esther and her new boyfriend goes almost entirely unmentioned. The episode in which Joanne and Noah smoke weed promotes the liberal Californian narrative that marijuana is not a dirty drug-taking habit. There are still sprinklings of humour within, but no specific funny scenes.

This season is easily the best, but the series as a whole is still ruined by religious intolerance.

6/10
