I Will Find You (review)

Harlan Coben’s latest Netflix thriller is full of the usual twists and turns, though this one takes place in his native USA.

David Burroughs is five years into serving a prison sentence for murdering his own son Matthew. But he didn’t do it. When his sister-in-law visits and shows him a photo of a child who looks exactly like Matthew, David breaks out of prison to find him.

The series is wholly entertaining throughout, from the jailbreak in the first episode to the standoff in the last. There are continuous developments which allow for no slacking in pace, which has been a problem at times in past Coben shows. It follows David on his mission as well as the FBI’s hunt for him, offering up an element of police procedural without keeping viewers in the dark. However, it is almost comical how easy David manages to evade law enforcement multiple times when he is the subject of a highly publicised federal manhunt.

Following several leads, it is eventually revealed that Hayden is behind Matthew’s disappearance. This in itself is not so shocking as he did play a suspiciously helpful role in assisting David and Rachel, but it is rather the reason why that is particularly thrilling - he believed that he was Matthew’s father as he thought that Rachel was attending a fertility clinic (actually Cheryl) and ensured himself to be the donor.

Furthermore, it is undeniable that the US production aided the series as this allowed it to keep its intended setting from the novel.

I Will Find You is a fast-paced thriller that flies high up on the top tier of Coben adaptations.
