Emma Myers is back as the teen detective in this second season of the BBC thriller series.

Pip is dragged into a new investigation when Connor’s brother Jamie goes missing. Meanwhile, Max is on trial for his rape charges.
The new investigation into Jamie’s disappearance is better than that of the first mystery as it is compelling to watch and makes progress throughout as opposed to the lulls felt in the earlier episodes of the first season. Furthermore, the case intensifies when it is learned that Layla is a catfish using Jamie to find Child Brunswick, the accomplice who helped lure the victims of his serial killer father as a child. Additionally, the Max subplot, particularly having Jamie as an intended witness at his trial, nicely maintains ties to the first season, even if justice still doesn’t prevail.
A tough fact that must be faced here is that Pip is an unlikable character, a risky move when she is the protagonist. Her good girl persona is tainted by her obsession for solving the cases, which often sees her break the law to get what she wants, and, where her heart might be in the right place, it isn’t untrue to say she upends innocent people’s lives in her pursuit for the truth. Despite being good-natured deep down, she is cold and harsh on the outside and definitely prioritises her investigation over her relationship with supportive boyfriend Ravi.
The season offers up a satisfactory ending as Charlie is revealed to be Layla and was hunting Child Brunswick because his sister was one of the victims. Charlie’s brief scenes portrayed him as suspicious, so this reveal doesn’t come as a massive surprise but still makes for an entertaining finale as Stanley is shot and the manor goes up in flames. The season ends somewhat unresolved as Max still hasn’t received his comeuppance and the one threatening Pip is still unidentified and at large, setting things up nicely for the commissioned third and final season.
Season 2 is still nothing groundbreaking but well worth the watch and certainly outperforms the first run.
